Using Expert Knowledge to Identify Possible Groundfish ‘essential Fish Habitats’
نویسندگان
چکیده
ABSTRACT Despite over a century of exploitation of fish in European waters, scientists know surprisingly little about the precise distribution of the major commercially exploited fish species, and their habitat requirements. This is the first European study that aims to identify essential fish habitats of commercially important fish species (cod, haddock, whiting, plaice, sole, plaice, lemon sole) in the Irish Sea and the English Channel (UK). Areas of the seabed that harbour the highest densities of these species were identified and mapped using an existing database spanning 12 years’ data from national stock assessments.

Groundfish Essential Fish Habitat Environmental Impact Statement
At the September 2004 meeting, the Council considered a preliminary range of alternatives developed by the Ad Hoc Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Oversight Committee for evaluation in the Groundfish EFH EIS. The Council adopted a somewhat altered range of alternatives and forwarded them for analysis in a draft EIS (DEIS) (The analysis of the range of alternativ...
متن کاملThe role of closed areas in rebuilding monkfish populations in the Gulf of Maine
The use of fish closures as a management tool to protect juvenile fish habitat and adult spawning grounds has become increasingly popular, although knowledge of the direct effects of marine closures on juvenile fish populations is limited. Given that monkfish landings account for a considerable percentage of the monetary value derived from the groundfish fishery in new England, investigating th...
متن کاملA Spatially Distinct History of the Development of California Groundfish Fisheries
During the past century, commercial fisheries have expanded from small vessels fishing in shallow, coastal habitats to a broad suite of vessels and gears that fish virtually every marine habitat on the globe. Understanding how fisheries have developed in space and time is critical for interpreting and managing the response of ecosystems to the effects of fishing, however time series of spatiall...
متن کاملEssential fish habitats (EFH) of small pelagic fishes in the north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, Iran
Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries and are distributed along the coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Using a logbook on small pelagic fisheries, a GIS-based environmental modeling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of anchovy and s...

Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries, and are distributed along the entire length of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea coastal waters. Using small pelagic fisheries logbook, a GIS-based environmental modelling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of an...
